NOLAN, Sister Elaine, SC (Sister Mary Elaine), a beloved Sister of Charity, Halifax for 69 years, entered peacefully into eternal life with her God, on July 6, 2024, at Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley, MA. Sister Elaine was born in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late Martina M. (Monaghan) and Neil Alexander Nolan. Along with her parents, Sister Elaine was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph D. Nolan and Robert T. Nolan. She is survived by her brothers, James C. Nolan and Martin F. Nolan and his wife, Elizabeth Weld.
Sister Elaine had a large and loving family including 16 nieces and nephews, many grandnieces and nephews, several close cousins locally and on Prince Edward Island and her Sisters throughout the Congregation. Sister Elaine’s primary ministry was education, a ministry which took her far and wide. She began at Saint Sabastian’s School in Woodside, NY. From New York she traveled to Halifax, Nova Scotia to teach at the Oxford School. Her ministry took her next to Renton, Washington, where she taught at Saint Anthony School for ten years, before moving to Vancouver, BC to teach at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School. Returning to Boston in 1976, Sister Elaine continued her teaching ministry for the next 32 years at Saint Kevin School, Monsignor Ryan Memorial School and Elizabeth Seton Academy, all in Dorchester, MA. During that time, Sister Elaine spent a year of study, pursuing courses in Art, which was one of her deep passions.
Among her many interests, Sister Elaine was very involved with the Sisters of Charity Associates and earlier served on the Congregation’s Formation Team in the Boston area. She formally retired in 2005 and continued her artistic endeavors, which were a blessing to many. Sister Elaine moved to Marillac Residence in 2021. Funeral Services for Sister Elaine Nolan, SC will take place on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Mount Saint Vincent, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley, MA. Wake, at 9:30 AM, followed by a Prayer Service, at 10:15 AM and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45 AM. Interment will take place at Saint Mary Cemetery, Needham, MA immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sister Elaine may be made to the Sisters of Charity Retirement Center, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley, MA 02481.
I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of Sister Elaine. She was an art teacher of mine at Monsignor Ryan memorial in Dorchester Massachusetts. I was very fond of sister Elaine and her gentle nature. She will be missed.
