Maguire, Alice (Agnes Regina), SC, died peacefully at Caritas Residence in Halifax, NS, on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at the age of 93. Sister Alice was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on February 24, 1933, the daughter of Harry and Agnes (Whitworth) Maguire.
Sister Alice entered the Sisters of Charity–Halifax in 1950 and made her first profession in 1953. Throughout her life as a Sister of Charity, she devoted herself to sharing the love of Christ primarily as an elementary school teacher.
She began her teaching career in New York for 13 years before receiving her B.Sc in Elementary Education in 1964 from Mount Saint Vincent College. After graduating, she taught at Elementary schools in Woodside, New York, Port Hawksbury, NS and Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1973, Sister Alice returned to Halifax and received her B.A. (English Major) from Mount Saint Vincent University, and for the next 5 years carried out administrative work at Pax Provincial House. During this time, Sister Alice also volunteered, ministering to patients at Camp Hill Hospital.
In 1978, Sister Alice returned to her home state of Massachusetts, where she worked as a librarian and substitute teacher in Lawrence for 24 years. When Sister Alice retired from teaching in 2002, she volunteered ministering to senior Sisters and residents at Parkstone Enhanced care until 2008 when she moved to Caritas, the Sisters of Charity Retirement residence in Halifax, NS.
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we remember Sister Alice as a woman of extraordinary humility, kindness, and quiet strength. Sister Alice embodied the true spirit of a Sister of Charity, living a life marked by gentle compassion and unwavering patience. Known for her sweet and gentle nature, Sister Alice was truly humble. She never spoke an unkind word, never complained, and faced her own health challenges with remarkable courage and grace. Even as her health became increasingly fragile, she bore her suffering silently, never allowing it to shadow her warmth, her smile, or her gracious spirit.
Beyond her devotion, Sister Alice had passions that brought her joy. She was a great sports fan, especially baseball, enjoying the game until her final days. She stayed informed about the world around her, following news from her home state and, as a dual citizen, faithfully participating in both Canadian and American elections. Her care for her communities extended from quiet acts of service to an engaged, thoughtful citizenship.
Sister Alice leaves behind a legacy of unwavering kindness, selfless love, and gentle strength. Those who were fortunate to know her felt the warmth of her heart and the kindness of her spirit. She will be remembered not only for her charitable works but also for the quiet dignity and grace with which she lived her life. May Sister Alice rest in eternal peace, embraced by the love she so gently shared in life.
In addition to her parents, Sister Alice was predeceased by her brother Paul Maguire.
