MALCOLM, Sister Margaret (Emily Cecil), died peacefully at Caritas Residence, Halifax on August 19, 2024 at the age of 89. Born in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Sabine (Rose) Malcolm. She entered the Sisters of Charity Halifax in 1953 and made her first profession in 1956.

Sister Margaret (Sister ‘Peggy’) received her B.Sc. in Elementary Education in 1966 and her B.A. in 1970 from MSV Academy. Sister Peggy taught elementary school in Vancouver, Halifax, Glace Bay, Dorval, QC and Bermuda. Sister Peggy went on to earn several diplomas and certificates in Theological and Pastoral studies from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Queen’s Theology College in Kingston, ON and the Toronto School of Theology.

Following her teaching career, Sister Peggy worked in Campus Ministry at Assumption University, ON and St. Mary’s University, NS before moving into Prison Ministry in 1987, a calling to which she devoted the rest of her career.

Sister Peggy was brave, fun loving, generous and happy, with nonstop energy and support for many. She had a good sense of humor and was a faith-filled Sister who gave joyful witness to love throughout her life. She was inclusive and welcoming, particularly in her work meeting the religious needs of the inmates through compassion, kindness and love.

Sister Peggy brought joy to others through her musical gifts as singer, pianist & guitar player. She was in the choir at Caritas Residence and sang and played for staff and residents up until her final days.

In addition to her parents, Sister Peggy is predeceased by her brothers Cecil, William, John and Clifford and her sisters Mary (Oswald), Eunice, and Emily. She is survived by her sisters Elise, Catherine and Elizabeth (John), numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A Prayer service to welcome Sister Peggy’s body home will be held at Immaculate Conception Chapel, Caritas Residence on Monday, August 26th at 2pm followed by visitation until 4:00pm, Atlantic Time. The Vigil Service will be held at 6:30pm Monday evening. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 27th at 10:30am Atlantic Time. The Funeral Mass will be a private service for Sisters, family and Associates. The Funeral Mass will be livestreamed. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity-Halifax.
