Torley, Sister Teresa (Cyril James), 93 died at Caritas Residence, Halifax, N.S. on July 12, 2019. Born in Stellarton, she was a daughter to James and Catherine (Quinn) Torley. Sister Teresa entered the Sisters of Charity–Halifax on September 8, 1944 and made her First Profession on April 6, 1947. She graduated with her Masters of Education from Saint Michael’s College, Vermont; her B.A from Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax; and completed studies in Death and Dying and Palliative Care at Saint Paul’s University, Ottawa. Sister Teresa taught school in North Sydney, Halifax and Stellarton. She always spoke fondly of her students and in particular loved working with her school choirs. Sister Teresa was principal at Saint Mary and Saint Brigid Schools in Stellarton and the local superior. After retiring from teaching in 1982 she continued in parish ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Stellarton.
In 1987 she was appointed Provincial Superior of the Vice Province at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in Halifax. Sister Teresa had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of many choirs throughout her life as well as at Caritas Residence. To her family she was lovingly known as “Tish”. Sister Teresa will be remembered by her warm and genuine smile and how her face lit up whenever people she knew came by. She is survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her brothers James and John and her sisters Elizabeth (Bette), Mary, Kathleen (Kay) and Agnes. Visitation will be at Caritas Residence, Halifax, N.S. on Tuesday, July 16, from 3p.m. until the Prayer Service at 7p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 17 at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, N.S. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
