MacIntyre, Sister Mary Josepha (Mary Elmer), died at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Caritas Residence, Halifax NS, on May 17, 2021. Born in Glace Bay, CB, she was a daughter of the late Roderick and Sadie (MacInnis) MacIntyre. She entered the Sisters of Charity-Halifax in 1936 and made her First Profession in 1939. At the time of her death, Sister Mary was 102 years old, and the oldest living member of the Sisters of Charity-Halifax.
Sister Mary received her B.A. from Mount Saint Vincent University and she also held a Certificate in School Administration. She was a well loved teacher who taught school for 41 years in Nova Scotia, Alberta, Labrador and New York. For fifteen of her years in Education she served as Principal in Herring Cove and then in Enfield. Sister Mary was highly respected by her students and their families for her compassionate dedication to learning and her commitment to ensure that every student received the education and personalized support they required to succeed. Sister Mary was known for her exceptional work ethic and her values of equality, fairness and inclusiveness. She saw the good and potential in others. Sister Mary had a gift for inspiring excellence in others and an ability and reach out to students who needed extra support. She often devoted time to tutoring students and providing extra help with a kind heart and loving encouragement. Many dear friends and students kept in touch with Sister over the years.
After her retirement from teaching, Sister served in Pastoral Ministry in a number of parishes. Sister Mary also served as Coordinator for Elizabeth Seton Residence in North Sydney.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sisters Betty, Jessie and Bernice (Gieke). A burial service will be held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. Due to the Provincial Covid 19 restrictions, a Funeral Mass will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
