McGaughey, Sister Margaret (Regina Louise) SC, died peacefully at Caritas Residence on March 5, 2025, at the age of 102. She was born in Bonshaw, PEI in 1922. Sister Margaret was the daughter of the late John Edward and Louise (Curley) She entered the Sisters of Charity-Halifax in 1940 and made her first profession in 1943.
Margaret wanted to be a nurse, however, when she made her vows as a Sister of Charity in 1943, the Sisters needed teachers so she was sent to Dorchester, MA, to teach grade two for three years. She went on to teach in Halifax, and Glace Bay. Sister Margaret taught for 38 years, her final class the grade eight boys at Saint Stephen’s School in Halifax.
After her retirement, Sister Margaret served as Provincial Treasurer for six years, then turned to her first love, and began 21 years of service as a volunteer in nursing homes and hospitals in Halifax. She considered it a privilege to work in the Palliative Care unit. The people that she met there, both other volunteers and patients, opened her mind, she said, to the depth of faith and spirituality to be found in all religions. In 2009, Sister Margaret moved to Caritas Residence, where she continued her ministry with the sick for several years.
We thank Prince Edward Island for the gift of this alert, bright-eyed, kind-hearted soul with a wonderful sense of humor. Growing up in a farming family, she learned early the strong work ethic that characterized her life. She loved the land and its creatures and loved the countryside which “gave her life” as she put it. Living in a small rural community, she witnessed the value of cooperation and the importance of reaching out in care and concern to her neighbors. This value guided her through life for 102 years and made her an exceptional teacher. Sister Margaret was greatly loved by her family and friends, her many students and her fellow Sisters of Charity.
In addition to her parents, Sister Margaret is predeceased by her two brothers James and Alfred McGaughey, and her three sisters, John Agnes McGaughey, SC, Johanna Malone and Della Toole. She is survived by her niece Sister Helen Malone, SC and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
