Sister Margaret Malcolm (Emily Cecil)

Sister Peggy died peacefully at Caritas Residence, Halifax on August 19, 2024 at the age of 89. Born in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Sabine (Rose) Malcolm. She entered the Sisters of Charity Halifax in 1953 and taught elementary school in Vancouver, Halifax, Glace Bay, Dorval, QC and Bermuda. Following her teaching career, Sister Peggy worked in Campus Ministry at Assumption University, ON and St. Mary's University, NS before moving into Prison Ministry in 1987, a calling to which she devoted the rest of her career. Sister Peggy was brave, fun loving, generous and happy, with nonstop energy and support for many.

Sister Barbara Gorham (Barbara Michael)

Sister Barbara was a beloved Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 65 years, entered peacefully into eternal life with her God on August 13, 2024, at Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley, MA. Sister Barbara's ministry was centered in education, as a teacher and then a guidance counselor. She spent several years at Saint Michael's School in North Andover, MA, and then at the former Saint Mary's School in Randolph, MA. In the early 1970's, Sister Barbara was missioned to Saint Patrick's School, where she served as a teacher, counselor and tutor, and in the parish, for 49 years. During those years, she spent some time as a member of the Novitiate Community of the Sisters of Charity in the Boston area.

Sister Elaine Nolan

Sister Elaine's primary ministry was education, a ministry which took her far and wide. She began at Saint Sabastian's School in Woodside, NY. From New York she traveled to Halifax, Nova Scotia to teach at the Oxford School. Her ministry took her next to Renton, Washington, where she taught at Saint Anthony School for ten years, before moving to Vancouver, BC to teach at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School. Returning to Boston in 1976, Sister Elaine continued her teaching ministry for the next 32 years at Saint Kevin School, Monsignor Ryan Memorial School and Elizabeth Seton Academy, all in Dorchester, MA. During that time, Sister Elaine spent a year of study, pursuing courses in Art, which was one of her deep passions.

Sister Madeleine Geiger

Sister Madeleine attended Mount Saint Vincent University where she received a B.Sc in Secretarial Studies in 1968. Sister was active in her ministry for over 50 years which began in education, teaching in Dartmouth and Stellarton, NS. In 1958, she returned to Halifax and worked in various departments of the Congregational Administration offices. She faithfully returned to her family farm in Tawatinaw, AB to care for her aging parents in 1980. In 1983 she resumed her ministry and worked in various departments for the Archdiocese of Edmonton.

Sister Noreen Trainor (Francis Paula)

Sister Noreen attended Mount Saint Vincent University, receiving her B.SC. in Elementary Education in 1962 and her B.A. in 1969. Sister Noreen was in active ministry for 70 years. She taught school for thirty-six years, beginning in Yarmouth NS, then to Dorchester and Andover Massachusetts; before returning to NS to teach in Halifax, Dartmouth, Terrence Bay and Shad Bay. After retiring from teaching in 1985, Sister Noreen continued serving God for an additional thirty-four years in congregational, parish and hospital ministries. Her ministries included Parish Assistant at Star of Sea Parish, Financial Assistant at the Sisters of Charity PAX House, and Pastoral Ministry for the elderly and the sick at the Samuel Prince Manor and the Victoria General Hospital. For years at Saint Stephen’s Convent she gave generously of her time caring for the communities of Sisters and overseeing daily operations of their home.

Sister Mary Harrington (Edward Josephine)

Sister Mary's primary ministry was education as a gifted teacher of elementary school children. She spread her "sunshine" in classrooms for 45 years at Our Lady of Angels School, Brooklyn, NY, Saint Patrick School, Roxbury, MA, Saint Perer School, Lowell, MA, Academy of the Assumption, Wellesley, MA, Saint Peter School, Dorchester, MA, Saint Michael School, North Andover, MA, Saint Francis of Assisi School, Manchester, NH and Saint Paul School, Wellesley, MA. Along the way, at each of these missions, Mary additionally taught Religious Education classes, managed school supplies and served as treasurer in several local communities. After leaving the classroom, Sister Mary served in Congregational ministry as Provincial Secretary of the former Boston Province and then as part-time receptionist at Sacred Hearts Parish, Malden, MA.

Sister Barbara Kelly (Barbara Marie)

Sister Barbara's primary ministry was education, but her many and varied gifts led her to embrace other pathways as well. She began teaching at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine School in Jamaica, New York and moved from there to Holy Savior School in Westmont, NJ, then to Sacred Heart School in Riverton, NJ. Having earned a Master's degree in Spanish, Sister Barbara returned to Boston and taught Spanish, English and Religious Studies, at the Academy of the Assumption, Wellesley, MA and Monsignor Ryan Memorial High School in Dorchester, MA. Then pursuing studies in the secretarial and finance field, Sister Barbara served at Saint Patrick High School, Roxbury as Secretary and Vice Principal, then in the Payroll and Records Bureau at the Massachusetts State House, as an Administrative Assistant at the Carney Hospital and the Forsyth Dental School and as treasurer for the Jesuit Community at Weston College in Cambridge. She served in Congregational ministry as Provincial Secretary and then briefly, at Mother Caroline Academy and Saint Margaret Parish in Dorchester. Sister Barbara's last mission was at Holy Name Parish and School in West Roxbury.

Sister Glenna Lee Connors

Sister Glenna's primary focus was education, but her desire to fully embrace the mission of a Sister Charity, which is to make the love of God visible to others, led her is to embrace several pathways. She began teaching at the Oliver Junior High School, Lawrence, MA and from there, she taught at Saint Michael School, North Andover, MA and Saint Patrick School, Roxbury, MA, before serving as principal at Saint Margaret School, Dorchester, MA. She returned to the classroom at Monsignor Ryan High School, Dorchester, MA. Moving away from the classroom for a time, Sister Glenna served as Pastoral Associate at Saint Philip Neri Parish, Waban, MA and at Atlantic Fund Raising, Needham, MA. She taught music briefly at Saint Francis of Assisi School, Medford, MA and returned to parish service as Pastoral Associate at Saint John-Saint Hugh, Dorchester, MA and later, at Saint Peter School and Parish, Dorchester, MA., where she was engaged in Music Ministry. For the past sixteen years, Sister Glenna was involved in Spiritual Direction at her parish, Immaculate Conception in Weymouth, MA.

Sister Dorothy Hamilton (Grace Paula)

Sister Dorothy's primary ministry was teaching. At the elementary level, she taught at Saint Peter School and Saint Kevin School in Dorchester, MA, and later at Saint Francis of Assisi School in Medford, MA. She was missioned to Bishop Reilly High School in Fresh Meadows, New York, where she taught math for eight years before returning to teach math at the former Elizabeth Seton High School in Wellesley, MA. In addition, she provided tutoring services for the town of Wellesley and at the Babson Institute. She served as teacher at Mass Bay Community College and was a facilitator in the Learning Lab there. Sister Dorothy's skills were not limited to the classroom. She was a bookkeeper for the town of Wellesley and two dental practices. In her later years, she was drawn to ministry to the elderly and pursued studies in this area from Andover Newton School of Theology and the University of Massachusetts, Boston, acquiring certification in Gerontology.

Sister Francis Anita Kearns

Teaching was at the heart and soul of Sister Francis Anita's ministry as a Sister of Charity. She began her educational journey at Saint Sebastian School in Woodside, New York and for the next 54 years helped to shape the minds and hearts of countless numbers of young people in Canada and the United States. From New York, Sister Francis Anita was mission to Mount Carmen Elementary School in New Waterford, Nova Scotia and then to Saint Veronica School in Dorval, Quebec. Returning to her home state of Massachusetts in 1964, Sister Francis Anita taught at Saint Paul School in Wellesley and Saint Joseph School in Needham. Upon completing full-time teaching, for the next five years she served as the Coordinator of the then Assisted Living Program at Mount Saint Vincent, Wellesley. From 2001 until her formal retirement, the need to care for her aging mother, her ailing brother, Albert and her sister, Helen was a call to which she responded with great courage, generosity and love. But Francis Anita was no one to shy away from additional ministry activity! During these years, she also volunteered in the Religious Education program at Saint Mary Parish in Randolph, MA.
